CEUTA: meeting of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and associations of the Mediterranean Area

Ceuta - from September 11th to 12th 2009

During two days, was held with the invitation of the UNESCO Center of Ceuta, a meeting of the UNESCO clubs and centers of the Mediterranean Area. Four round tables were laid down on the following topics :

- UNESCO Clubs and Centers in Europe

- Present and future of UNESCO Clubs and Centers in Spain

- Experiments of Spanish and Moroccan UNESCO Clubs and Centers

- Initiatives of the foundation “El Baille of civilizaciones” and of the Institute Cervantes de Tétouan

The assembly of the Spanish Confederation of UNESCO Clubs and Centers chaired by President Javier Zulaika Leoz, had as objective, supporting emergence of a federator project, if not at the level national, at least common to several Spanish UNESCO Clubs and Centers.

Several members of the EFUCA executive council were invited to take part, in particular on the topic of "UNESCO Clubs and Centers in Europe”. The president of the European Federation, Lionel Vinour, the vice-president, Juan Antonio Vera Casares, as well as the tresaurer, Adeline Popescu made speaches.

After the official opening by the president of center UNESCO of Ceuta, Mercedes Cuevas, the representative of the government in Ceuta, Jose Fernandez Chacon, in the presence of the representative of Juan Jesus Vivas Lara, president of the autonomous city of Ceuta, wished full success to the participants in their work underlining the big role of the UNESCO Clubs and Centers to make triumph “the force over the reason against the reason of the force”.

The Spanish National Commission for UNESCO was represented by Consuelo Vasquez Rueda, director of programs, who more particularly follows the various networks of galaxy UNESCO in Spain.

The meeting was the occasion also to share one strong moment with the partners of the Moroccan civil society, in the presence of the president of the UNESCO association of Tetuan, Hamed Ben Aboud, during a displacement in the Moroccan city of Tetuan, and the visit of its medina, registered with the world heritage of humanity. It was also the occasion to share the rupture of the fast in this period of Ramadan.

Lastly, representatives of Italy, Paola Gotta of Center for UNESCO of Turin, and Portugal, Maria de Carvalho Teixera of the Club of the Town of Oporto, were also invited to present experiments of centers and clubs. The Spanish participants came from all the areas of Spain and in particular: Asturies, Melilla, Baeza, Malaga, the Canaries, Murcie, Osuna, Pechina, Albacete, Valence, Ceuta, Elche, Seville, Barcelona (Catalan Federation), Campo of Gibraltar, Madrid, Basque Country (UNESCO Etxea), Andalusia (center UNESCO), Navarra (Center UNESCO), Castilla Mancha, Castilla Leon, Priego de Cordoba, Ahoren of Tenerife…

At the time of the closing session, Fédérico Mayor Zaragoza, former general director of UNESCO, insisted in a message read at the assembly, on the need for rather reinforcing the initiatives for peace by a daily attitude than to claim “to make peace by preparing the war”. Lastly, Javier Zulaïka Léoz thanked the participants for the quality of the debates and the important participation while calling in the installation of a joint project as Consuelo Vazquez Rueda ensured the participants of the assistance of the National Commission.

The whole of the debates will be published in a document available near UNESCO Center of Ceuta.
